Kirana Gharana
History and Legacy
Gharanas of Indian classical music are traditions and repositories of knowledge and artistry passed down through generations. Each gharaana has its own distinct style. Ustad Abdul Karim Khan popularized the Kirana style that emphasized the use of meend, intricate taans, and a deep emotional connection to the raga. With the introduction of the concept of "bhava", he emphasized that music should evoke deep feelings and emotions in both the performer and the listener, transcending the boundaries of technique to touch the very essence of the human experience. Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, the legendary Kirana Gharana maestro spread the Kirana Gharaana's influence all over the world.

As a musician deeply rooted in the Kirana Gharana tradition, discussing my gharana is more than just talking about a musical lineage; it's a reflection of my identity, my journey, and my passion for music. My journey as a musician has been shaped by the guidance and teachings of my gurus, who imparted to me the invaluable knowledge and wisdom of the Kirana Gharana.

The Core Philosophy

The main principle governing the style of Kirana gharana is absolute purity of Swara. Each note is approached with extreme care and microtonal precision (shruti) is considered as an essential part of the performance. A Kirana gharana performance feels meditatibe because the singer spends long stretches exploring just a few notes, which creates an intense emotional atmosphere, drawing the listener inwards.
Slow Development
One of the most recognizable features of the Kirana gharana is its vilambit (slow-tempo) emphasis. A Kirana khayal may spend a long time in the lower octave, gradually revealing the raga through subtle movements and gentle meends (glides). The singer builds emotional intensity through restraint. This leads to a hypnotic or spiritual experience for the listener.
Modern Kirana-influenced artists continue to perform on global stages, teach new generations, and adapt the tradition to contemporary contexts without losing its essence.
Role of Kirana Gharana in 2026
In an age of instant gratification, the Kirana gharana reminds us of the beauty of slowness and depth. It teaches that true impact does not come from excess, but from attention, discipline, and emotional truth.
For listeners, Kirana music offers a space to pause and reflect. For students, it provides a rigorous training ground that sharpens both technical skill and inner sensitivity. This is why the Kirana gharana is not just remembered — it is lived, practiced, and shared.
